MENTORING

I support students in their professional development, career planning, and decision-making — through conversations, practical tasks, and advice from my experience in culture field, research, and creative practice.

If you are interested in mentoring or simply a good piece of advice — write to haralds.matulis@gmail.com. I'm notorious for loving to give advice! : )

We wrapped up my first year in the University of Latvia mentoring programme „Izgaismo nākotni”. Here in the photo with my wonderful mentees in the 2025./2026. academic year season – Katrīna, Linda, Haralds, Rēzija, Indra, & Kate and Gabriēla were not present at the last session.

What can I say – I'm pleased with this experience! 💚 I plan to do it again next year. 🦜 Thanks to Dace Siliņa from the UL Career Centre for organising this programme!🧶 Thanks to Uldis Zariņš and the UL library for the welcoming hospitality!

Participant feedback

Rēzija

“In the humanities it is easy to lose hope of finding your place, but Haralds Matulis was able to turn this hopelessness and confusion into possibilities. During mentoring, valuable networking and creative methods advice was provided, as well as engagement with each mentee's individual issues, helping to look for solutions. Thus, Haralds became our inspiration and proof – yes, even in humanities everyone can find their place and be happy in it. I will miss the sessions with countless new impulses, ideas, advice and above all – a feeling of genuine support.”

Katrīna

“The mentoring experience was very inspiring and useful, I began to be more aware of my abilities, became more self-confident in the professional field and also gained a lot of practical advice. I always felt free in this environment, conversations and advice over several months encouraged me, allowed me to reflect on everything achieved so far. I am glad that I applied for the programme!”

Linda

“I applied for mentoring because when I started studying for a doctorate I was confused about how the study process works. Doctoral studies are very different from bachelor's and master's studies, because there is no concrete lecture list to follow every day. Haralds showed me that there is no reason to worry and gave useful advice. Haralds's strong side is communication, and that is very important, because often problems we face in everyday life can be solved with good communication skills.”

Indra

“I was motivated to apply for mentoring by the hope that it would help me understand my place in the professional field more. At the time I didn't even imagine that from this process I would gain as much valuable insight, support and inspiration as I have received. Haralds is the most wonderful mentor that a slightly frightened and confused student in academic life can even imagine! He was genuinely interested in everything working out for you – starting from seemingly simple (but very important) email writing culture, and ending with the ability to set goals for yourself and not be afraid to achieve them.

Once, walking home from mentoring, Rēzija and I jokingly (but quite seriously) concluded that every student would need a Haralds like that :)”
