Decolonial Ecologies – Chernivtsi

Chernivtsi was created as part of the Latvian Centre for Contemporary Art exhibition “Decolonial Ecologies. Understanding the Postcolonial after Socialism” (2022).

“In the exhibition ‘Decolonial Ecologies’, artists address relationships between people and their environments in our recent past and today, foregrounding themes such as the (post-)Soviet legacy, the meaning and experience of place, memory, landscapes shaped by technology and industry, the cultural stakes of ecological issues and social practices, and alternative strategies for meeting the challenges of environmental crisis and climate change.” (source)

The material result of the project is a series of eight paintings and corresponding discursive practices. The paintings bring together relatively autonomous post-socialist / post-colonial motifs in one sequential narrative. The discursive practices interplay with the images next to them, shifting the semiotics of both text and image in that interplay and producing a new, combined meaning.
